Invermere resident falls victim to phone scam

On Wednesday, February 19, an Invermere resident reported falling victim to a scam.

Columbia Valley RCMP reported the individual received a phone call from a person who claimed his Social Insurance Number (SIN) and bank accounts had been compromised and he was directed to purchase Google Play cards in order to get a new SIN.

The caller had spoofed the Columbia Valley RCMP phone number and told the individual he would be arrested if he did not follow the instructions.

The caller purchased $950 worth of Google Play cards and provided the information to the caller. “Fortunately, the victim did not provide any personal information to the caller,” said Sgt. Darren Kakuno, Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment commander.

Police are reminding residents that legitimate agencies do not accept prepaid gift cards in lieu of payment.
