John Hague Electoral Area G Volunteer of the Year
John Hague has been honoured as the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Electoral Area G 2026 Volunteer of the Year for 2026.
“John has made a lasting impact in the Columbia Valley by sharing his time, his leadership, and his passion for sport and community well-being. Over the years, he has helped create opportunities for people of all ages to stay active, connected, and engaged,” said RDEK Electoral Area G Director Roberta Schnider.
As head referee with the Columbia Valley Minor Hockey Association, John played a key role in supporting and facilitating young people’s love of the game. His steady presence, leadership, and commitment to minor hockey helped ensure that countless young athletes could enjoy the sport, learn important life skills, and be part of a positive team environment.
An avid badminton and tennis player in the valley, Hague has taken his volunteer spirit even further in recent years by helping introduce pickleball to the Columbia Valley. Seeing the potential for the sport to bring people together, John worked hard to find court space, teach new players, and build interest in the game.
Through his dedication, patience, and enthusiasm, pickleball has become a well-established activity in the valley, especially for middle-aged and older adults who appreciate the sport’s accessibility, social connection, and health benefits.
In addition to his work in sport and recreation, John has also volunteered with Groundswell Community Greenhouse and Gardens, sharing his knowledge of permaculture gardening, mentoring aspiring gardeners and helping others discover both the practical and personal rewards of growing food at home.
“John’s efforts have enriched lives, strengthened connections, and created opportunities that will continue to benefit people for years to come,” added Schnider.
Hague was recognized at the Area G Information Meeting held last night (June 9) in Edgewater.
