Panorama ready to open 60th anniversary season

Panorama Mountain Resort is opening for its 60th season on December 10.

The resort opened exclusively for alpine race training on November 5, hosting training camps for a record number of national and regional teams.

Some big things are coming this season.

First off, unlike Fernie and Kimberley, COVID-19 vaccination is not required in outdoor areas, including ski lifts and masks are not required in outdoor areas, including ski lifts.

Face masks are mandatory in all indoor public spaces. This applies to people aged five and older and there are no exceptions, the resort website notes.

Proof of vaccination must be presented to enter village food and beverage establishments. A government issued, valid photo ID is also required at entry.

Leading up to this season, Panorama has spent $1.25 million on new snowmaking and safety infrastructure, including the installation of North America’s first TechnoAlpin TT10 fan guns.

The resort’s Alpine Training Centre has also received an injection of more than $850,000 from the B.C. Government through its Community Economic Recovery Infrastructure Program (CERIP), which is “huge for the continued development of tourism and business in the Columbia Valley,” said Steve Paccagnan, President and CEO of Panorama Mountain Resort.

“Further enhancing Panorama’s racing and training facility enables us to draw international visitation during November, early December and late spring, which are traditionally lower volume periods.”

A highlight of the year will come in March 2022 when Panorama will become the first resort in Western North America to host the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships.

Top athletes from Canada and around the world will race for the podium in the nine-day festival from March 1.

The winter season will conclude April 17, 2022.

The Columbia Valley’s other ski resort at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort is expected to open in mid-December.

Fernie Alpine Resort opens for the season Dec. 4 and Kimberley Alpine Resort’s opening day is Dec. 11.
