Appreciative village council hears RCMP quarterly report

By Stephanie Stevens

“I drive a lot at night and I am genuinely happy for how often I am stopped (by RCMP)” is a sentence that would likely make anyone raise an eyebrow.

It was uttered by Councillor Mike Gray at the Jan. 22 council meeting for the Village of Radium Hot Springs to Columbia Valley RCMP Sgt. Darren Kakuno, attending the meeting to give his third quarter report to the village.

Gray was referencing the diligence he feels members of the detachment give to road safety, specifically impaired drivers and especially during the holidays.

Road safety is among the top priorities of the local detachment, along with crime reduction, substance abuse and working with youth, both to reduce the incidence of youth involved with crime as well as addressing bullying in schools.

Kakuno also reported last fall the detachment implemented the WITS (Walk Away, Ignore, Talk it Out and Seek Help) program in two local elementary schools and it was well received.

“We will continue to work closely with our school district to identify other opportunities to support youth in our community,” he told council.
