Stuck out-of-bounds snowmobilers receive fine

On February 4, four snowmobilers became stuck in what turned out to be the closed area of Holt Creek, west of Golden.

“Golden, B.C. and its surrounding areas attract snowmobilers from all over the world,” said Golden-Field RCMP Media Relations Officer Constable Donna Freeman.

“For snowmobilers who traverse the backcountry, especially within an alpine environment, it is essential to plan ahead and be well-prepared for quickly changing environmental conditions.

“Precautions need to be made to carry emergency supplies, pack extra clothing, a cell phone power bank, know your limits, and to be very careful not to go out of bounds in avalanche prone areas.”

In this case, the snowmobilers received a $575 fine for Use or Operate a Motor Vehicle in Closed Area and will be responsible to pay for the helicopter for recovery of their snowmobiles.

The RCMP remind those enjoying outdoor activities to exercise caution and be prepared for potential risks.
