Use extreme caution around ice as weather warms

With warmer weather settling into the Columbia Valley, ice conditions can change quickly and unpredictably.

As we head into the weekend, please use extreme caution on all frozen surfaces—especially lakes, river edges, and any areas with moving water, the District of Invermere cautions.

Even when ice looks solid, warm temperatures, sun exposure, and fluctuating freeze–thaw cycles can create weak spots that are difficult to see.

If in doubt, stay off the ice.

Please note: The District of Invermere does not check or monitor ice thickness or ice conditions on Lake Windermere. Anyone choosing to go onto the ice does so at their own risk.

The good news? There are lots of other great ways to enjoy the Columbia Valley this weekend—from hiking and Nordic skiing to local shops, events, and community activities.

A shout out to the Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club for all their hard work, keeping us informed. Their ongoing monitoring and communication help keep everyone safer and better informed.

Stay safe, enjoy the valley, and look out for one another.
