A Tree For Peace

Proposal for all children – United Nations International Day of Peace Celebration Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. in Cranbrook’s Rotary Park

The Cranbrook Celebration for Peace Society and organizing committee wishes to propose a competition open to children and youth of all ages. The theme for the competition will be based on United Nations International Day of Peace; Acceptance; Anti-Bullying; Peace; Love; Kindness; and/or whatever your perception of ‘PEACE’ might be.

It will be your choice of medium to express your ideas – write a story, write a poem, draw and/or paint a picture; design something. Our society will host free ‘peace poster drawing/colouring’ in Rotary Park 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. July 22 and August 12 and 26. One was already held on July 8.

All entries will be submitted to Cranbrook Celebration for Peace Society for the selection of this year’s recipients. Closing date for entries is Sept. 1. Contacts: Jim Wavrecan (250-919-5451) email: [email protected] ; Eileen Braaten (250-417-3458) email: [email protected]; mailing address: 304 – 14 Victoria Ave. S., Cranbrook, B.C ., V1C 3H7.

The society will provide the trees to the City of Cranbrook Leisure Services to plant in Kinsmen Water Park honouring the recipients; a plaque will be placed on the trees honouring the winning persons. The ‘Rocky Mountain Peace Grove’ will be two circles of Autumn Blaze Maples – middle ring of three trees surrounded by outer large ring of 10 trees, depicting Canada’s 10 provinces and three territories. How exciting is that… you can watch your tree grow over the years and be so proud of your contribution to ‘peace’ in this city!

A press release and photo op will be arranged; and the lucky recipients will be honoured at the Celebration for Peace on Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. in Rotary Park. Mark your calendars!

The recipients for 2015 were Conor Love, Anica Beaudoin, Sarah Metzler, and Flynn Passey (Van. Island); for 2016 – Seren Berdsco, Camryn Lucas, Elisha Paganghan (AB), Flavio Gomez Faria (Brazil); and Adina Switzer, Ellie Brown, Kylie Wilson (AB), Takuma Sawa (Japan), Andrea Passero (Italy).

Our committee is excited to receive lots of entrees … we expect to have a difficult task to choose the winners! Who will have a tree planted in their honour?
