All hail to kale: tonight and Thursday

Wildsight Kimberley Cranbrook and the Cranbrook Food Action Committee are offering the third and final session of their Fall Kitchen workshops series, All Hail to Kale.

The workshop runs this evening, Tuesday, October 20 in the McKim Middle School kitchen on Rotary Drive in Kimberley, and on Thursday, October 22 in the Community Connections Kitchen on 16th Avenue North in Cranbrook. Both workshops run from 7 until 9 p.m.

KaleKale has been a winter staple in Northern European countries for centuries, and its popularity has been on the rise in North America, earning it the status as a ‘superfood.’ It is unbelievably hardy and continues to grow after the first frost, which unlocks kale’s underlying sweetness making it an ideal vegetable to grow here in East Kootenay.

Even though this easy to grow superfood is an ideal vegetable to plant in the unpredictable East Kootenay garden, growing is one thing and how to use it in the kitchen is another. On the evenings of October 20th and 22nd participants will discover some old and new recipes that put Kale in the forefront and tantalize any palate.

Kale FallKitchenWorkshopCollageDirk de Geus, the Food Sustainability Coordinator for Wildsight Kimberley Cranbrook, grew up in The Netherlands eating Kale as a staple winter dish. Since being in Canada he has discovered that there are many more ways to prepare, serve, and eat kale, and is excited to share them. Dirk assures he will be trying everything in his power to “tickle the taste buds for Kale.”

The cost of the workshop is $25 for Wildsight Members, and $30 for non-members, with all materials included.

If cost is a barrier, volunteer bursaries are available to cover registration. For more information or to register visit: https://www.wildsight.ca/kitchenworkshops, or call 250-427-9325 x 221.
