Amendment approved for craft brewery

City of Cranbrook council Nov. 8 adopted a zoning amendment that allows for the establishment of a craft brewery in the former Juniper Lanes Bowling Alley.

The approved zoning amendment (City of Cranbrook Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 4057, 2021 – 1400, 4th Street North – Red Brick Enterprise Ltd.) adds “craft brewery” use to the C-2 Highway Commercial Zone, specific to the property.

“The applicant has taken over the former Juniper Lanes Bowling Alley and the proposed zoning amendment will enable them to revitalize the property as a craft brewery and pub/restaurant,” outlines a report by Engineering and Development Services’ Rob Price.

The applicant, Red Brick Enterprise Ltd. and Encore Brewing Company Ltd., intends to construct areas for craft brewing tanks, kitchen and customer seating in place of several bowling lanes. Eight of the original 16 bowling lanes are intended to be retained for the use of the patrons.

“We would like to add a craft brewery to the former location of Juniper Lanes Bowling Alley. We will be removing some of the lanes and repurposing the space for a kitchen, seating, and the brewery itself. It is our hope, as it was with our other business, Fire Hall Kitchen & Tap, to add to the vibrancy of Cranbrook’s downtown. We love being a part of this community and try, at every turn, to contribute to Cranbrook,” outlined Jesse Roberts of Encore Brewing Company Ltd. in a letter to the city.

Council held a Public Hearing on October 25, giving third reading to the proposed Zoning Amendment Bylaw.

The Advisory Planning Commission reviewed the proposed zoning amendment and recommended that Council approve the amendment. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has approved the proposed zoning amendment.
