Cannabis store application has city support

City of Cranbrook council Jan. 21 voted to recommend support for a retail cannabis store application in the former Greyhound building.

The city received a Notice of Application from the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB ) for 1171882 BC Ltd – Jimmy’s Cannabis Shop – for a non-medical cannabis retail store license for a retail space located at 1229 Cranbrook Street North.

The proposed location is a vacant space in a commercial strip mall, which includes food service and a salon, a city Office of Innovation and Collaboration report outlined.

Plans submitted indicate the floor space of the suite is approximately 2,044-square feet. The applicant is requesting operating hours of 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week.

Council based support on:

  • The property is located on a highway commercial corridor and is zoned C-2, Highway Commercial Zone.
  • No negative impacts on the community are anticipated if the application is approved as the use is permitted in the C-2, Highway Commercial Zone and is located among other commercial service and food and beverage establishments;
  • The view of property owners/occupants within approximately 30 metres of the proposed location were gathered by way of written invitation by the city to comment on the application within two weeks of the date of the correspondence. No comments were received.

Council also approved a development variance permit for the relaxation of part of Zoning Bylaw No. 3737, 2012 for this proposed cannabis retail location to reduce the minimum separation distance from 50 metres to 45 metres between cannabis retail stores in the C-2 zone.

Council directed city staff to bring back an amendment to the zoning bylaw to remove the setback distances between cannabis stores at a future meeting.
