Cattle grazing as fire management
Field day to showcase pilot project Oct. 27
Cattle grazing may be an effective management tool to mitigate wildfire by controlling the buildup of forest fuel, such as dry grasses.
A pilot project is currently underway in the Cranbrook area to assess how targeted grazing on rangeland can help control forest fire fuel and enhance both grasses and ecosystem.
On Tuesday, October 27, farmers and ranchers are invited to discuss the preliminary results of the targeted grazing pilot project with a free field day from the Kootenay and Boundary Farm Advisors and visiting experts on grazing management.
“In addition to reducing forest fire fuel, targeted grazing can also make the remaining grass healthier. They utilize grass for a shorter period of time and then the grass gets a longer restoration,” said rancher Jordy Thibeault. “It stays greener in a vegetative state longer, and so it’s less likely to burn.”
