Those who frequent downtown Cranbrook will notice some changes to two parking lots, following a review undertaken by the city of all municipal lots and overall downtown parking.

The number of leased parking stalls has increased in both the 9th Avenue parking lot (located on 9th Avenue between Baker and 1st Street South) and the McKinnon parking lot (located between Cranbrook Street North and 1st Street North behind the Bank of Montreal and East Kootenay Credit Union on Baker Street). New signage indicating the parking changes were installed at all three entrances to the McKinnon lot. Painting of “RESERVED” on the cement barriers and stall numbers to indicate reserved parking was undertaken at both the 9th Avenue and McKinnon lots.

“We strongly encourage those who work, shop and have appointments downtown to pay extra attention when using two hour parking in these two lots, to make sure they are not occupying a reserved stall,” said Don MacMillan, Bylaw Services Officer with the City of Cranbrook.

Bylaw Services will be patrolling these lots on a regular basis to ensure the new rules are being followed.

The parking inventory review began in December 2015 to implement the use of new parking identification cards that are now issued to reserved space holders. The card allows for easy identification by Bylaw Services Officers and Parking Meter Attendant of vehicles being parked in reserved stalls without proper authorization from the city; thus facilitating the ticketing. The additional signage and painting, which was recently completed, was also identified as a priority during the review.

There are approximately 558 public parking spaces in the downtown area; this includes both metered and two hour spaces.
