College of the Rockies’ expanded south entrance, completed in 2010, has achieved certification by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program.  LEED certification indicates the new construction meets the highest environmental performance criteria in Canada.

LEED is an internationally accepted standard for the design, construction and operation of green buildings. The Canadian rating system is adapted from the US Green Building Council’s LEED Green Building Rating system with adjustments for Canadian climates, construction practices and regulations.  LEED Canada Rating Systems are promoted by the Canada Green Building Council as a means to encourage and facilitate the development of sustainable buildings.

The certification process includes a point-based system covering six areas: site development, water efficiency, material selection, indoor air quality and innovation in design.  Following an independent review of these design areas, College of the Rockies’ expansion received a total point score sufficient to qualify for LEED certification.

College of the Rockies’ Facilities Manager Allan Knibbs says, “This project is an example of the College’s commitment to sustainable business practices.  Using green building practices for the expansion has many benefits including lower operating and energy costs, a healthier environment, production of less waste, lower water usage and reduction of our carbon footprint. We are very proud to have achieved this internationally recognized indicator of excellence.”
