COTR nursing students hosted health promotion event

College of the Rockies’ first-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing students held a health care information event at the Salvation Army on Thursday, March 14.

The students in their first semester of the Nursing program were tasked with undertaking a collaborative group project centred on health promotion in the community. The group chose to focus on increasing awareness of homelessness and exploring how this marginalized group accesses health care.

The students visited various community support agencies including the Salvation Army and Street Angels in order to find out what the needs of this group were and how the students could help meet those needs.

Group member Lisa Smith says, “What we learned is that there is a need for Cranbrook health care.”

During the event, the nursing students offered attendees a handout with a comprehensive list of health services available in Cranbrook. The brochure is geared toward marginalized individuals with hopes that they may discover services they were not formerly aware of.

The group would like to thank the College of the Rockies, The Salvation Army, Street Angels, Walmart, Superstore, Safeway and other local businesses and organizations for their contributions.
