Council approves funding for rail overpass feasibility
City of Cranbrook council Monday night authorized $21,000 to fund a high-level rail overpass feasibility assessment for an alternate alignment off Theatre Road.
The funding is being drawn from the city’s Financial Stabilization Reserve.
“This high-level assessment is an addition to the study completed in 2021. This work will review the previous study options with the goal to create a revised alignment to minimize impact of the land needed for the overpass in neighbouring properties. The location is still situated near 1335 Theatre Road, the only feasible location within the city for a rail overpass,” outlines a report to council by Bryce Bostock of Engineering and Development Services.
“An overpass would link Theatre Road with Industrial Road 1 in order to provide a safe, reliable, and non-congested access to the west side of Cranbrook. Urban Systems is currently working on the transportation studies for Victoria Avenue, including the intersection of Highway 3/95 and Victoria Avenue / Theatre Road.
“The overpass location of interest, on Theatre Road, is within the same traffic corridor already under review and design by Urban Systems. From a planning and engineering perspective a rail overpass and the intersection of Highway 3/95 and Victoria Avenue / Theatre Road are highly dependent on one another,” Bostock noted.
“Having both assessments completed by the same party would not only ensure planning /engineering efforts are aligned but would also be a more efficient use of costs and resources.”
