Council commits to winter festival event

City of Cranbrook council Dec. 5 approved funding up to $50,000 and committed providing city staff in-kind resources to help spearhead a winter festival event in 2023.

The event is to be organized internally and council directed staff to seek private sponsorship and consider charging entry fees to the event to help offset costs.

The initial ask of council was around funding for another Winter Blitzville, which first debut in 2019 as a winter event designed to benefit our residents, provide an opportunity for winter fireworks, support community vibrancy in the downtown core, and draw visitors to the community.

This first event delivered rail jams, fire dancers, DJ and beer gardens, Monster Energy snowmobile freestyle, and fireworks.  The following year, 2020, the event moved to Western Financial Place.

The city worked with local volunteers to successfully present the previous events.

Council also requested city staff to put together options for this winter festival event and come back with plans at a later date.
