Cranbrook RCMP is pleased to announce the launch of the BC Safe Place Program within the city.

BC Safe Place is a program which offers people shelter if they are feeling unsafe — a place where they will be welcomed, they can call police, and wait until officers arrive. By placing a decal in their window, participating businesses and organizations will be clearly identifying the premise as a safe haven and ally for members of the LGBTQ community.

According to a report by statistics Canada hate crimes against the LGTBQ community were more likely to be violent than hate crimes targeting other groups. Additionally, only a fraction of hate crimes against the LGBTQ community are reported at all with some members of that community stating that they are afraid that their concerns will be dismissed. Working towards creating more awareness and cohesion within the community can lead to a reduction in violence – sending a message that it is not ok to discriminate, harass or attack people.

To participate in the program. Local businesses are asked to sign a commitment that their employees will assist members of the LGTBQ community should they be in need of protection.  Once the commitment is signed, the Cranbrook RCMP will issue the business with a decal to be placed in their business, clearly identifying that they will provide a safe haven until the police can be called.

“The Cranbrook Detachment is excited to be a part of this great initiative.   Too often members of the LGTBQ community feel there is no safe place for them if they are being threatened or harassed.  By becoming a part of this program, the community of Cranbrook is committing themselves to a more inclusive community,” said Cst. Katie Forgeron.
