Cranbrook RCMP warning residents about fake rental scam

Cranbrook RCMP has been notified of a person “renting” a property that they did not own.

On June 26, Cranbrook RCMP was alerted to a fake rental scam occurring in the area.  The victim advised RCMP that he had gone online to rent a place in Ontario.  He provided the suspect with first and last month’s rent in the amount of $2,800.  When the victim then asked to see the residence in person, the suspect ceased all contact.

Members were told that a person using the email [email protected] was on several sites attempting to rent out an apartment both in Ontario and Cranbrook.

The photos for the apartment were the same for the rental residences in both areas. The links for those residences have now expired.

“Scammers are going online, uploading photos of apartments and posing as the owners in order to get cash. We want potential renters to know that they should not give out any money before viewing a property in person and ensuring the person showing the house or apartment proves ownership,” said Cst Katie Forgeron of Cranbrook RCMP.
