An evening walk around Fort Steele
By Ian Cobb/e-KNOW
Earlier this summer, I had the opportunity to wander around Fort Steele Heritage Town as evening descended (photo gallery below).
While Carrie took in the first showing of The Happy Medium, playing until Sept. 5 at Wildhorse Theatre, I snuck off with a single camera (my Pentax with a lovely 70-200 1:2.8 Sigma lens) and basically had the place to myself – short of a few staff doing end-of-day chores such as feeding the animals.
It wasn’t the best of conditions as a thick blanket of clouds had swooped over the Cranbrook area before we arrived but as I wandered and shot, the light became more and more appealing.
I love shooting Fort Steele. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say I’ve shot more than 10,000 frames of the place in the past seven or eight years. Each and every time I go there, when I have the time and head to get into a shoot, I leave happy from the experience. The volume of old buildings, angles to shot them and the race of light that sweeps over the sprawling heritage attraction depicting NWMP Col. Sam Steele’s fort and community of 1890 creates a myriad of other opportunities to get great shots.
With the Rockies as one backdrop, the Purcell Mountains as another, Mount Baker as another and the Kootenay River winding around the former centre of the East Kootenay, Fort Steele Heritage Town is a must-see for history buffs, camera bugs and anyone into a nice walk in a beautiful setting.
Coming at Fort Steele, on Sunday, Sept. 11, is the annual Kootenay Country Fair.
