Firehall keeping Christmas torch burning

The virus who stole Christmas?

Our pals at the Cranbrook DQ and Arby’s loved Christmas a lot, but COVID-19, the wrecker of fun, did not. COVID hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season! Now, please don’t ask why, no one quite knows the reason.

Due to the complications of hosting a volunteer event in a time of COVID, DQ and Arby’s have had to cancel their annual Community Christmas dinner. This would have been their 22nd straight year. Let’s acknowledge that for a minute – for over two decades, the volunteers and staff of those two restaurants have given up family-time, ON CHRISTMAS DAY, to feed strangers.

In that time, almost 6,000 plates of turkey dinner have found their way into the hands and hearts of those that needed them most.

We must keep Christmas coming, but how?

Feeling inspired by the incredible generosity of those two teams, one of Santa’s very oldest helpers, and the many volunteers, we decided to pick up the torch.

HOW: The Fire Hall Kitchen and Tap cooks will be building delicious Christmas Turkey dinners ahead of time and freezing it. The rest of the team will be delivering these meals the days before Christmas. Folks will then heat up their meal on Christmas day!

WHEN: We will be taking calls at Fire Hall, 778-520-0911, from December 10 to 20 to arrange meals and deliveries.

If you’re calling on behalf of someone else, this is the info we’ll need:

– Name of person you’re calling for;

– Number of hungry people;

– Address of drop-off;

– Best phone number, in case we need further directions;

– Best date to drop off – Dec. 22, 23, or 24;

– Any other info that would be helpful.

Merry Christmas, all.
