Funding approved for emergency repair at WFP

City of Cranbrook council July 13 approved an emergency repair to Compressor 1 in Western Financial Place (WFP), with costs not to exceed $145,000.

Compressor 1 is part of the refrigeration and cooling systems serving WFP.  Facility staff have reported that the compressor is experiencing ammonia leakage through the shaft seal and has been removed from service due to operational concerns, a Public Works report noted.

Facility maintenance contractors have recommended a complete rebuild of the unit. As a result, the facility is currently operating with a single compressor.

According to facility operations staff, continued operation with only one compressor significantly impacts the facility’s ability to maintain ice temperatures and provide adequate cooling to the arena, pool and building systems, particularly during summer operating conditions.

The compressor rebuild had previously been identified as a future capital requirement; however, no funding was included within the approved 2026 budget.

Public Works has therefore established Capital Project FAC0122 to facilitate the repair and requested council approval to proceed.

The funds will come through the deferral of the 2026 WFP Lighting Components project ($90,000) and the 2026 WFP Squash Court Refurbishment project ($68,000), in order to undertake the emergency rebuild of Compressor #1.
