Getting help without getting high

On Saturday, September 29, Medical Cannabis Specialist Dr. Rob Sealey touches down in Cranbrook to present a physician’s perspective on medical cannabis.

This feature talk, sponsored by CanniMed, is part of Kootenay CARP’s Forever Young Health Event, being held in Cranbrook to celebrate National Seniors Day.

Dr. Sealey has been involved in both the clinical and research aspects of Medical Cannabis since 2001. In addition to running his own full-service family practice in Victoria (including hospital and long-term care facilities), Dr. Sealey has volunteered his services around the world, and co-hosted the nationally syndicated radio program “WiseQuacks” for over eight years.

He has travelled extensively across North America as one of few instructors in the field of Medical Cannabis. Dr. Sealey has many years of experience authorizing the use of Medical Cannabis for a variety of ages and conditions.

This extensive subject, although comprehensive in nature, is presented in an entertaining manner that is both educational and engaging. “Medical Cannabis may be an option when standard medications are either ineffective or associated with intolerable side effects,” says Dr. Sealey, “Seniors are one of the largest demographics that are currently using Medical Cannabis,” he concludes, “But it’s important to know that it’s more than just a brownie.

There are ways to get help without getting high

The one-hour talk, starting at 1pm will touch on several aspects as they relate to patients of all ages: the endocannabinoid system, history and evidence, potential conditions that may be treated, dose, administration, side effects, possible drug interactions, safety and the difference between using the plant for medicine vs. recreational purposes (recreational marijuana use becomes legal Oct 17!).

Following his presentation, Dr. Sealey will dedicate ample time to audience Q&A: come prepared with your written questions.

Forever Young starts at 10:30 a.m. on September 29 with a mini health fair, highlighting CARP Services and National Partners such as Cannimed (medical cannabis licensed provider), Iris (vision care), SierraSil (natural joint pain relief) and Sanofi (producer of FluZone high dose flu vaccination).

Select local service providers will host on-site activities, and Cranbrook’s Age Friendly Community Initiative will offer an update on this important project.

Forever Young 2018 will be held at the easily accessible Cranbrook Alliance Church, 1200 Kootenay Street North. Ample parking, fully accessible, and all on one level!

Tickets are $10, available at Lotus Books (Cranbrook) and the Snowdrift Café (Kimberley). Residents in other areas can email or call to reserve tickets.
