ICE in line to add another high bantam pick

The Kootenay ICE put in a spirited effort in the 2017/18 Western Hockey League (WHL) season.

As expected heading into the season, the re-building ICE, on the ice and front office, finished the season in line to add another high draft pick to an already sparkling variety of young talent on the Cranbrook-based club, or coming soon.

The WHL Bantam Draft lottery will be held Wednesday, March 21 at 11 a.m. at the WHL Office in Calgary to determine the order of the first six selections in the first round of the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft.

The WHL Bantam Draft Lottery will involve the six non-playoff teams (Edmonton, Prince George, Calgary, Kootenay, Kamloops and Saskatoon) from the 2017-18 season. A team may only move up a maximum of two positions in the WHL Bantam Draft.

Finishing fourth in the Central Division with a 27 win, 38 loss, seven overtime/shootout losses record, good for 61 points in 72 games, the ICE finished fourth last in the WHL this season. That means the ICE could move up to second overall in the lottery.

The lottery will be streamed live on WHL.ca, Facebook and YouTube Live commencing at 11 a.m. MDT.

The lottery selection process will be performed by Braden Smith from KPMG. The 2018 WHL Bantam Draft will be held in Red Deer on Thursday, May 3.

The order of the second round and all other rounds will be the inverse order of final 2017-18 WHL regular season standings.

Players eligible for the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft will be 2003-born players who reside in Alberta, B.C., Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
