Junior ICE skater launched

The Kootenay ICE, in collaboration with Pacific Coastal Airlines, has launched the Junior ICE Skater.

The Junior ICE Skater is a unique opportunity that select children will have the chance to experience. Reminiscent of what other hockey clubs do in leagues around the world, each child chosen to be the Junior ICE Skater of the game will join the team as they skate onto the ice before a game while waving the ICE flag. In addition, the Junior ICE Skater will stand on the blue line with the players during the singing of the national anthem(s).

There will be at least 12 Junior ICE Skaters selected throughout the 2018-19 season.

Each Junior ICE Skater must be between the ages of seven and 14 and must bring their own hockey equipment and have prior skating experience.

“This is a great opportunity for kids in the East Kootenay, and we are extremely excited to help present this feature, along with the ICE, at ICE home games this season,” explained Jenelle Hynes, Business Development and Customer Service Manager with Pacific Coastal Airlines. “We look forward to witnessing the excitement and enthusiasm of every Junior ICE Skater as they skate with the ICE before games.”

“Adding a Junior ICE Skater to our game day production will allow various children a thrilling and special hockey experience and also add energy and excitement to the crowd. We thank Pacific Coastal Airlines for providing another unique opportunity to our fans,” said Leah Watkins, Director, Business Operations and Fan Experience for the ICE.

The ICE knocked off the Calgary Hitmen 5-3 during their home opener Sept. 22.

The next Western Hockey League regular season tilt for the ICE is 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 28 at Western Financial Place versus the star-studded Spokane Chiefs.

The two clubs head to Spokane Saturday for a 7 p.m. re-match at Veterans’ Memorial Arena.
