Laurie Middle School locked down after incident

School District No. 5 (SD5) Southeast Kootenay has issued a statement regarding an incident at Laurie Middle School today (Oct. 24) that precipitated an emergency lockdown and RCMP response.

“As the safety of our students and staff will always be our first priority, we made the necessary decision to put Laurie Middle School into lockdown during the lunch hour,” SD5 stated on its website.

“The RCMP responded promptly and have dealt with the situation involving a student. Thankfully, due to the schools’ quick response and the involvement of the RCMP the situation was quickly defused.

“As soon as possible, we were able to move Laurie Middle School out of lockdown and into a hold and secure procedure which means that students and staff were able to stay in their individual classrooms while the RCMP concluded their investigation.”

All students and staff are safe and secure and RCMP are still at the scene, SD5 reported.

“We request all parents not to come to the school at this time as we are still in a hold and secure position,” the statement concluded.

UPDATE as of 2:20 p.m.: Student dismissal will be as usual at Laurie Middle School and buses will proceed with no disruption to services.  More information to follow.
