Local Muay Thai Canada champion

October was a huge month for Rocky Mountain Martial Arts Family Centre (RMMA) with Tyson Hirscher becoming the Muay Thai Canada +91KG B class champion on October 21 with a unanimous win in his first battle and a TKO the next day in his second fight.

Tyson’s (pictured above left) grit and punching power were the keys to his victories in Ontario. Expect to see more from this talented fighter.

In Calgary on the same day Leyton Davis, Michael Petryshen and Carter Nicholas, all aged 12, and Lonni Edwards aged 52, were fighting at the Team Smandych Continuous Tournament (pictured below).

This was a hard day for the competitors as they fought very well but did not come home with any hardware to show for their efforts. However, they did come home with some bruises and the respect of their coach and peers because anyone willing to step into the square circle and square up has bravery and tenacity.

Especially Loni, stepping into a young man’s sport at his age! Unfortunately it does not always go your way when it comes to fighting and at times competition becomes a lesson in what the fighters and coaches have to work on. Every competition has a life lesson to offer if you are willing to listen.

October 28 was another huge day for the RMMA fighters as Jared Spurr travelled all the way to Athens, Greece, stepping into the ring to look for gold in the WKU K1 world competition.

Jared’s opponent hurt Jared with a vicious knee to the chest and knocked him down in the first minute. Jared came back strong with some vicious leg kicks and body attacks that must have frustrated his opponent because he answered with a blatant illegal knee to the head. (Knee strikes were only allowed to the body.)

Jared ended up in the hospital with possible head and neck injuries and his opponent ended up being disqualified.

When the dust settled Jared came home with a WKU world silver medal and the satisfaction of fighting hard and coming home with some hardware to prove he is a world class fighter. Jared (pictured fighting below) gave up inches of reach and at least 20 pounds in weight to his opponent but he did not use that as an excuse to cheat or be a poor sport. He is a true champion and a great example of what an honourable fighter looks like.

November will be a quiet month for us. Tyson is working hard to get ready for his next fight in Airdrie, Alberta on December 1 in the event Trial by Fire. This will be a full contact modified Muay Thai battle and Tyson’s first fight against an opponent with more height and reach then him.

Tyson is hoping to be tested hard in this battle and to come out of it stronger and wiser after. At RMMA Family Centre we are behind Tyson 100% and expect him to do what he always does; fight with heart and integrity.
