Local named WHL Rookie of the Year

Bowen Byram

Cranbrook’s Bowen Byram has been named the Western Hockey League’s (WHL) Western Conference Rookie of the Year.

The WHL today announced the award winners for the 2017/18 season, with Vancouver Giants’ defender Byram among those named.

Originally selected third overall by the Giants in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft, Byram enjoyed a terrific first full season in the WHL, scoring six goals and 21 assists from the Giants’ blueline.

Named the WHL’s player of the month for February, Byram also suited up for Canada at the 2017 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and helped Canada Red to a silver Mmedal.

WHL Conference Awards are voted upon by all WHL General Managers and Head Coaches.

All individual WHL Conference Award winners will be eligible for the overall league awards at the 2018 WHL Awards luncheon in Red Deer, Alta., on Wednesday, May 2.

WHL Rookie of the Year (Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy)
Eastern Conference Rookie of the Year – Dylan Cozens (Whitehorse, Yukon) – Lethbridge Hurricanes.
Western Conference Rookie of the Year – Bowen Byram (Cranbrook, B.C.) – Vancouver Giants.
WHL Most Sportsmanlike Player of the Year (Brad Hornung Trophy)
Eastern Conference Most Sportsmanlike Player – Aleksi Heponiemi (Tampere, Finland) – Swift Current Broncos.
Western Conference Most Sportsmanlike Player – Cody Glass (Winnipeg, Man.) – Portland Winterhawks.
WHL Executive of the Year (Lloyd Saunders Memorial Trophy)
Eastern Conference Executive of the Year – Alan Millar – Moose Jaw Warriors.
Western Conference Executive of the Year – Garry Davidson – Everett Silvertips.
WHL Coach of the Year (Dunc McCallum Memorial Trophy)
Eastern Conference Coach of the Year – Manny Viveiros – Swift Current Broncos.
Western Conference Coach of the Year – Dennis Williams – Everett Silvertips.
