Love and support shown for Ukraine in Cranbrook

About 40 people attended a candlelight vigil at Cranbrook’s Rotary Park on Saturday, Feb. 26, including members of the Ukrainian community in our area.

“We started with the Ukraine anthem followed by an emotional speech by a 17-year-old who has family hiding in a basement in the Ukraine,” reported vigil attendee Tamara Cartwright.

City of Cranbrook Councillor John Hudak addressed the gathering, noting how free we are in Canada and how devastating this invasion is.

Cartwright said more vigils will be held.

“We will be doing this weekly Sundays at 7 p.m. at Rotary until this war is over, unless there is an event then we will move to city hall.

“If this ends, we will then celebrate!  So many lovely people and we have many here,” Cartwright said.

Russia launched a major invasion of the Ukraine on Feb. 24.
