Massive blaze razes two buildings

Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services is all-hands on this afternoon at a massive two-building blaze on Cranbrook Street North (Sept. 1).

The old Royal Canadian Legion building and the May May Restaurant are now destroyed but still burning and some major Cranbrook thoroughfares are closed to traffic as the fire fight continues.

Early reports note the fire started in the old legion building, which was rapidly consumed by fire, which spread to the restaurant building.

The smoke column from the fire, fanned on by steady and strong westerly winds, spread across much of the city, with area businesses and residences impacted by a related power outage.

A colourful passerby stops to chat with City of Cranbrook Mayor Lee Pratt, who watched firefighters battle the blaze from the Heritage Inn parking lot.

The old legion building was gutted and sitting empty before the fire.
