Melodie Hull to run for city council

Melodie Hull, having lived in Cranbrook most of her life, has recently announced her intentions to run in the forthcoming municipal election for a seat on City of Cranbrook council.

“I love Cranbrook!” stated Hull. “I want to contribute my skills in research and inquiry, creativity and leadership to move this city forward.”

Her emotional connection to Cranbrook began as a child, growing up and attending school here. Hull has had an outstanding nursing career, furthering her contribution as a health professional by authoring multiple textbooks and influencing a significant number of nursing students as a College of the Rockies Nursing instructor. She has received several nursing excellence awards and was honoured in 2017 with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BC Coalition of Nursing Associations.

Hull’s interest in civic service is the natural next step in a lifelong commitment to community involvement. Her background in working with people of all walks of life has given her a valuable perspective that she believes will greatly add to a dynamic, cooperative team of leaders and informed decision makers to build Cranbrook into an outstanding place in which to live and do business.

She believes this is the right time to announce that she will be seeking election when nominations are open, September 4.

Hull said she is comfortable speaking with and listening to people.

“As councillor I want to honestly and truly hear the voice of the people, find the facts and move Cranbrook forward in the best way I can.”

Hull has written about issues that concern her or have been brought to her attention;

  • the potential and preservation of our heritage and heritage buildings;
  • the revitalization of downtown to make it a community hub and the “essence of our city;
  • the need for more affordable, low-income and transitional housing.

Other policies she wishes to address include:

Healthy communities – water management/water quality, parks and outdoor spaces.

Re-envisioning a plan to manage water run off to stop overburdening Joseph Creek.

Broadening of our tax and employment base through managed business development.

Food security – community gardens and food industry.

Recruitment and retention of health professionals.

The continuation of infrastructure improvements.

Community service and volunteering has been a huge part of her life, in both her career, volunteering overseas, and personal time. She is a past volunteer on the Board of the Cranbrook & District Community Foundations (CDCF) and subsequently created her own Endowment Fund for Mental Health & Addictions.

Hull holds a position on the Cranbrook Community Theatre Board of Directors and actively participates as a costumer and actress of live theatre. She recognizes the importance of fostering a Kootenay style culture and the value of all forms of art. Hull is also a committed and focused collaborator and creative problem-solver.

She has obtained three degrees including graduate degrees in Administration and Adult Education and has plenty of experience on Boards of Directors working as a team member on financial matters, inquiry, constitution and bylaws and more.

“I want people to know I am preparing myself,” said Hull, “And I’m eager to participate in the competition.”

BC General Local Election campaigns begin on Saturday, September 22 and end on Saturday, October 20, voting day.
