A new water tender is poised to begin operation with Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services (CFES), replacing a smaller tender that had reached the end of its service life.

The new 3,500-gallon tender, which arrived earlier this month, was purpose built for water delivery and has the capacity to load and deliver large volumes of water in non-hydrant serviced areas. As our water delivery needs increase over time this vehicle should assist the fire department in continuing to deliver efficient and effective suppression services to our suburban and rural customers.

“We designed this truck with longevity, ease of operation and maintenance in mind,” said Scott Driver, Deputy Director of Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services. “We can’t afford down time on specialized vehicles such as this, as such part of the process in designing the apparatus was to involve the maintenance personnel who will be working on it.”

Residents will definitely benefit from having this input, as it has proven invaluable in acquiring apparatus that can be maintained and serviced here in the Kootenays.

The budget for the new tender was $400,000 and the vehicle came in on budget.

Residents can expect to see the new tender travelling city streets regularly for the next few weeks as firefighters continue to familiarize themselves with the new vehicle.
