Odour in city water a natural and temporary occurrence

A slight odour currently noticeable in the community’s water supply is a normal seasonal occurrence and poses no risk to public health.

The City of Cranbrook’s primary water source is the Phillips Reservoir, which is affected each fall as air temperatures begin to drop.

As the surface water cools, it sinks and forces the warmer water from deeper in the reservoir to rise to the surface. This natural “turnover” process can bring organic material to the top, occasionally resulting in a mild odour in the water system.

“We sample our water throughout the system on a weekly basis, and the water being delivered to your homes and businesses is safe to use,” said Jason Perrault, Deputy Director of Public Works. “This is something we see every year, and it typically lasts only a few weeks.”
