Pure Power Wrestling returns with local Sept. 21
Local wrestler and her opponent discuss their paths into pro wrestling
Lethbridge based Pure Power Wrestling is returning to Cranbrook for another fundraiser show at College of the Rockies on September 21.
Their June 29 show saw the singles debut of Cranbrook’s own Poppy Powers, (Sarah Stupar). The Cranbrook native faced Angelica “the Bombshell” in the ring and came out on top. The two will face up again, this time on opposite sides of a tag team match.
Sarah is thrilled to be wrestling again in front of a home crowd.
“I’m really pleased that Pure Power Wrestling is bringing another show to Cranbrook. It seems like a perfect fit for Cranbrook, I’m actually surprised there aren’t more wrestling shows in this town.”
Sarah got her start in Vancouver wrestling on the independent show Glam Slam.
“It’s funny because I wasn’t really a wrestling fan growing up at all. I’m an actress and a dancer and I had this idea that I wanted to get into stunts when I was living in Vancouver. I took a stage combat class and then in order to keep up those skills I thought I’d try out this wrestling thing that some of my dance friends were doing. I instantly fell in love. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had performing.”
While Sarah’s origin story in wrestling might closely follow the kind depicted in the now popular Netflix series G.L.O.W., not every woman in wrestling started as an actress first.
Jenna-Leigh Nobert, who wrestles under the moniker “Angelica the Bombshell,” had a decidedly fitness background before starting wrestling. While she does have memories of watching professional wrestling at the tender age of 12, it faded from her interest through her high school years. It wasn’t until after her fitness transformation (losing over 100 lbs to step on stage in a fitness competition) that she found her way back to wrestling.
It was while working as a fitness coach and competing as a bodybuilder that Jenna started socializing with a new group of friends, including some who were involved in the Edmonton wrestling scene. It sparked her interest and she went on to train with Lance Strong at Storm Wrestling Academy. For the past three years she has been wrestling, all over Canada, and has even traveled to Mexico!
Poppy Powers and Angelica the Bombshell will be joining the PPW Heavyweight Champion Sydney Steele, “Cougar Meat” Kyle Sebastian, The Stormbringer and more at “Mountain Mayhem” a fundraiser wrestling show for College of the Rockies Avalanche Athletics on September 21.
Tickets for this all ages show are $15 and are available now at College of the Rockies and online.
