Cranbrook Depot (RDEK) has been recognized as one of B.C.’s top 30 collection sites for used oil and antifreeze materials in 2024.

The Depot ranked number 20 in the province thanks to their outstanding efforts in collecting used oil, and antifreeze materials – keeping hazardous waste out of landfills and protecting local ecosystems.

This recognition is part of Interchange Recycling’s sixth annual Top Collector Awards, which celebrate recycling centres across B.C. making an outsized impact.

A dozen Local Government facilities made the list, including the Regional District of East Kootenay’s (RDEK) Cranbrook Depot, located in the Cranbrook Transfer Centre.

“The Depot at the Cranbrook Transfer Station is a very busy site and we see many residents taking advantage of this eco-friendly and cost-effective way to recycle hazardous materials,” said RDEK General Manager of Engineering and Environmental Services Kevin Paterson.

The criteria used for determining Top Collectors included:

• the total amount of used oil and antifreeze collected at the RCF location.
• the total number of years participating in Interchange Recycling’s RCF Program.
• a demonstration of continued support of Interchange Recycling and other recycling-focused stewardship programs.

“Thank you to our staff for working hard to provide a convenient, environmentally friendly, and easy-to-use facility for the public, and to residents for making the effort to reduce their environmental footprint,” added Paterson.

Interchange Recycling, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the collection and recycling of used oil, antifreeze, oil filters, and automotive containers in British Columbia, recently announced the winners of their sixth annual Top Collector Awards.

Thirty B.C. public recycling centres have been recognized for their outstanding performance and commitment to collecting used oil and antifreeze materials across the province throughout 2024, including the Cranbrook Depot.

“All of our dedicated collection sites across the province contribute to keeping our local communities stronger and healthier, thanks to their ongoing commitment to keeping oil, filters, antifreeze and their containers, out of landfills,” said Jenn Robson, Director of Operations, Interchange Recycling.

“We wanted to recognize these 30 facilities who collected the most in 2024 for going above and beyond to provide an important service to local residents. We’re excited to share that we have never had so many B.C. government facilities make the Top Collector list before, there are 12 who topped our list, and we’re proud to recognize the vital role these local governments have played in protecting the environment while promoting sustainable practices in their communities.
