What’s the buzz?
New January musical announced for Key City Theatre
The songs of Cabaret have barely faded from memory and the creative team at Key City Theatre are already busy working on next year’s musical and this one is going to be a doozy.
Jesus Christ Superstar A rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, will hit the Key City Theatre stage on New Year’s Eve and run for two weekends in January (2024).
Directed by Brenda Burley and produced by Galen Olstead, this will be the sixth annual locally-produced January musical for Key City Theatre.
Burley, no stranger to directing big Broadway-style musicals for local audiences, is excited about the choice for the next homegrown production.
“I’m a big fan of Superstar. I grew up listening to the album and have a huge love of the 1970’s style rock, gospel, folk and funk found in the soundtrack.”
Jesus Christ Superstar is loosely based on Biblical Gospels and tells the story of Jesus in the final days leading up to his crucifixion. Seen through the eyes of Judas Iscariot, the musical is unique in that it focuses on a conflicted Judas contemplating betrayal, and a very human Jesus experiencing fear, frustration and anger, while trying to come to terms with his role as both leader and martyr.
“The production has powerful rock music, high energy dance numbers, deep, meaningful themes and allows for unlimited artistic interpretations.” Burley anticipates a whole new set of challenges with this production. “There are no rules about how and when to set the action. I am very excited to create a unique, unexpected, and inventive production to tell this story.”
Each year Key City Theatre pulls together a team of local amateurs and professionals to create the iconic January productions.
“Our dream team is being assembled,” said Burley. “It all starts with the production team, and this year I am very excited that Nikki Gipman will be stepping in as our Production Manager.”
Emma Inman returns as Stage Manager, Amanda Casey as Vocal Director and Candice Fisk as Choreographer.
“I love working with this team. We are already busy getting the groundwork ready and laying out plans for auditions and rehearsals.”
Superstar has a large cast and Burley is hoping to welcome some new, local talent onto the stage.
“This is a great opportunity for people who have been sitting in the audiences the last few years, thinking they would like to try this someday. Now’s your chance – come out and join in the fun.”
Auditions for Jesus Christ Superstar will be held June 19 and 20 at Key City Theatre.
Key City Theatre is also looking for people interested in working backstage. Those interested in helping with sets, costumes, props, scenery, or makeup are also invited to reach out.
