Annual Wildlife-in-Focus photography contest launched

The Wildlife-in-Focus photography contest is back in its 18th year, running from July 2 through 23 and the BC SPCA is inviting everyone to participate.

Amateur photographers 14 years and older can submit their awe-inspiring images of wildlife taken in B.C. until July 23. There is no entry fee, and you can enter as many photos as you like.

“Wildlife-in-Focus brings together communities across B.C. to celebrate wildlife through beautiful imagery and support injured, orphaned and sick wild animals receiving care at the BC SPCA’s Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre (Wild ARC),” said wild animal welfare specialist Hailey Boehner.

“It is also a great opportunity for British Columbians to showcase engaging with natural spaces in an ethical and responsible way, all while supporting our care of and advocacy for wild animals across the province.”

Previous contest entries have been featured in the BC SPCA’s WildSense e-newsletter, AnimalSense and Bark! magazines, educational materials, local newspapers, websites, and social media. Prizes will be awarded for the top three photos, as determined by the judges, in each of two categories: Wild Settings and Backyard Habitats.

There is also a donate-to-vote option for a People’s Choice Award.

Winners’ photos will be featured in a mystery limited-edition Wildlife-in-Focus product available for purchase on shop.spca.bc.ca after the contest closes.

In 2025, Wildlife-in-Focus raised more than $4,000 for the specialized diets, medical treatment, and other supplies necessary to support the rehabilitation of wild animals at Wild ARC. More than 2,000 injured and orphaned wild animals are cared for at Wild ARC each year – everything from tiny hummingbirds to bald eagles and great blue herons, and from squirrels to deer fawns and the occasional reptile and amphibian.

All wildlife photos submitted to the contest must be taken within B.C. and submitted digitally. “Wildlife” includes free-living birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish, and insects, but not exotic, feral, or domestic animals, or wildlife in zoos, aquariums, sanctuaries, or rehabilitation facilities.

Not a photographer? No problem — you can still participate in the contest and support Wild ARC by voting for your favourite entries.

For more information on the contest, and to enter, view or vote for photos, visit spca.bc.ca/wildlife-in-focus.
