Another dose of winter on the way
Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting Ltd. warned stakeholders in an email this morning (March 31) that winter isn’t over yet.
“We have another weather event anticipated to impact the East Kootenay over the next 24 hours. We are expecting snow, overnight Tuesday across the service area. The weather event is forecast to continue until late Wednesday morning in most areas. Warming temperatures after the snowfall ends may also cause slippery sections on area roads,” Mainroad stated.
Mainroad’s meteorological service is predicting snowfall at varying intensities across the service area. Accumulation up to roughly three to five cm is expected. Mainroad also noted we can expect wind gusting to 25-35km/h in many areas. Air temperatures are forecast to be roughly -5C in most areas, dipping around -9C around Sparwood- Elkford.
“Our crews in the Elk Valley report that snowfall has also affected that area early this morning; snow clearing and anti-icing is already underway where necessary.
“Going forward into Wednesday, our forecast shows mainly overcast skies and slightly warming temperatures. Temperatures may climb to nearly 0C in southern parts of the service area such as Moyie- Yahk. This warming trend may cause slushy conditions and associated road hazards. Motorists should exercise caution in these conditions, particularly when exiting main highways.”
Mainroad says its crews are applying anti-icing chemicals to major roadways to assist with snow removal and to help us to achieve clear road conditions much faster, once the event ends. The crews will continue to address road hazards as they arise during and after the event.
