Democratic and electoral reform committee seeks input
British Columbia’s Special Committee on Democratic and Electoral Reform is seeking input on democratic engagement and electoral reform.
The committee is accepting requests to present at a public meeting.
The committee, which includes MLAs from all recognized parties in the legislative assembly, was appointed in April 2025.
There are two parts to the committee’s mandate. The first part is to examine democratic engagement, voter participation and models for electing members of the legislative assembly. The second part is to review the administration of the 2024 provincial general election.
The committee will hold several public meetings in July 2025 to hear presentations in relation to the first part of its mandate.
The meetings will be a mix of in-person and virtual, and may take place in the following communities, according to a B.C. government media release:
* Cranbrook;
* Dawson Creek;
* Kelowna;
* Prince George;
* Richmond;
* Surrey;
* Vancouver;
* Victoria.
The members of the committee are:
* Jessie Sunner, MLA, Surrey-Newton (chair);
* Ward Stamer, MLA, Kamloops-North Thompson (deputy chair);
* George Anderson, MLA, Nanaimo-Lantzville;
* Rob Botterell, MLA, Saanich North and the Islands;
* Sheldon Clare, MLA, Prince George-North Cariboo;
* Amna Shah, MLA, Surrey City Centre; and
* Qwulti’stunaat / Debra Toporowski, MLA, Cowichan Valley.
Those interested in presenting have until 2 p.m. (Pacific time) on Thursday, May 29, to indicate their interest in speaking with the committee by completing a request form here.
In addition to holding public meetings, the committee will accept written input on democratic engagement, voter participation and electoral reform in mid-June 2025.
