Don’t leave valuables in vehicles: RCMP

The East Kootenay, like most of British Columbia, is absolutely blessed with countless backcountry locations in which to escape.

Most of the time these sites require some logging and bush road travel and are located in remote locations.

And these remote locations may create a false sense of security for people who are leaving valuables in their vehicles and paying the price, noted Cranbrook RCMP S/Sgt. Hector Lee.

“A lot of people are out camping and hiking in the backcountry and may feel immune to criminal activity,” he said, adding he wants to give the public a reminder to not bring any unnecessary valuables into the backcountry and keep them out of site or locked up (bikes, tools, recreational vehicles) if left unattended in or on vehicles.

For example, a vehicle window was recently smashed and a purse was taken from a locked vehicle at the trailhead of Bear Lake off Wildhorse Forest Service Road on July 28.

Columbia Valley RCMP has been warning visitors and locals for years about not leaving vehicles unlocked and leaving valuables in plain site.

There are numerous incidents each year about unlocked vehicles being plundered and break and enter incidents at such locations as the Hoodoos trailhead at Fairmont Hot Springs, Lussier Hot Springs parking lot or at the Radium Hot Springs pools parking lot.
