Extreme cold warning for Elk Valley, Kootenay Park

Environment Canada today (Feb. 24) issued an Extreme Cold Warning in effect for the Elk Valley as well as Kootenay and Yoho National Parks.

A period of cold wind chills is expected as an Arctic ridge of high pressure over Alberta will give cold wind chill values near minus 35 overnight tonight and Monday morning.

“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk,” Environment Canada warns. “Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill. If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.”

Extreme cold warnings are issued when cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frostbite and hypothermia.

The Cranbrook/Kimberley area and Columbia Valley are supposed to see a low of -23 C overnight.
