Fort Steele celebrating 100 years of steam
Fort Steele Heritage Town is very pleased to announce the Centennial Anniversary of its 1077 steam locomotive.
Built in 1923 by Montreal Locomotive Works, the 2-6-2 Prairie class locomotive has proudly served in British Columbia since then. Initially used for logging on Vancouver Island, the 1077 operated until 1969, making it one of the longest serving steam locomotives in Canada.
It was then sold to the B.C. Government, restored as a rolling museum train and ultimately moved to Fort Steele Heritage Town in 1990.
The 1077 locomotive caught Hollywood’s eye and was featured in ‘Shanghai Noon,’ ‘Journey of Natty Gann’ and various television commercials. Since its arrival at Fort Steele, it has delighted thousands of people from all over the world.
“We are extremely proud to be presenting the celebration of this historic locomotive,” said Gene Roshau, Fort Steele’s Train Department Manager. “Working on the train is a passion and to be part of its impressive history is an honour. The 1077 locomotive is not only dear to our hearts, but an important piece of Canadian history.”
The 1077’s Centennial Anniversary is significant to the history of British Columbia and Canada, the rail industry, logging industry and the steam era. The locomotive’s continued operation contributes to local and provincial tourism and economy.
A public opening ceremony will take place July 15 with the closing weekend and last run of the season aligned with Fort Steele’s Kootenay Country Fair, September 10.
