Environment Canada earlier today (July 29) issued a heat warning for the Columbia Valley area down to Cranbrook. Creston is also included in the warning.

Temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius combined with overnight lows near 18 degrees Celsius will continue. High temperatures will continue through Friday, Environment Canada reported.

The heat warning does not cover the Elk Valley, which remains under a ‘heat alert.’

A strong ridge of high pressure remains over the southern interior of British Columbia leading to hot conditions.

“On Friday, temperatures will begin to moderate over the southern interior as the ridge of high pressure weakens. The Kootenays will see temperatures begin to moderate slightly on Saturday, though hot weather will persist through the weekend,” Environment Canada said.

The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place. Reduce your heat risk. Schedule outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day.

Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.

Environment Canada and local Medical Health Officers expect an increase in health and safety risks from heat and are advising the public to take precautions.
