Here’s to doing better in 2023

It seems to be a common thing these recent years – stating at the end of each 365-day cycle that we hope the next year will be better.

After two years of pandemic yo-yoing, we all hoped 2022 would be a leap forward from the darkness of the previous two years.

And then a nasty little man with a mind caved in by corruption and greed launched an invasion of Ukraine, placing the world on the edge of an abyss unknown or feared since the daunting days of the Cold War.

Hope of better times ahead slumped like wet snow on a steep tin roof when Vladimir Putin proclaimed to the world Feb. 24 (2022) he has a puny wee phallus and sent murderous troops pillaging into the Ukraine.

The fallout of this action continues and world-wide economies and societies teeter – especially in the poorer parts of the world.

We in Canada are feeling the fallout – and we’re rich, fat n sassy compared to the vast majority of the rest of the world. Despite that FACT, a day before Putin invaded Ukraine, our sad sack, bumbling federal government finally put an end to the disruptive and altogether pointless cry baby parade of put out privilege, also known as the Truckers’ Convoy or ‘Canada Convoy.’

Whatever it was, it showcased to Canada and the rest of the world that even tempered and well educated as we are in this country, with universal health care and societal assurances of well-being for all, dark hearts lurk cloaked in hatred. A portion of our population is clearly more than capable of behaving like our American cousins – thin skinned, petulant, selfish and completely rabbit-holed with conviction over reality.

This past year was an illuminating one, that is for sure.

Locally, we can take solace with pride that our mountain communities continue to stride forward- often together – and progress despite growing challenges around housing, homelessness and the scourge of the opioid crisis. We must find answers to those problems because they are getting worse and that’s collectively on all of us in our society. The people suffering are our kin and community members.

There are many good souls breaking their backs trying to help and find answers, but more must be done. We can, collectively, do better. This past year showcased that.

Please join me in raising a glass and biding 2022 a fond adieu. And raise your glass one more time as we welcome 2023. Here’s to doing better and being better.

Cheers.
