Most highways under winter driving conditions

Kimberley

Snowfall yesterday and overnight has left some regional highways snow and ice covered for those heading out on this Easter long weekend Monday.

DriveBC reports winter driving conditions and slippery conditions in the southern half of the East Kootenay.

Highways 3, 3/95, 43 and 93 appear harder hit by the snowfall, with Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting on the job working to clear them. The snow-line appears to let up around Tata Creek and the roads are either wet and bare or dry from there north.

Watch for frost heaves on the highways, especially from Highway 3/93 to Radium Junction.

In Kootenay National Park watch for crews doing brushing work that started March 26 and will go until April 15 at various locations along Highway 93. Expect speed reductions and minor delays for equipment access. No work on long weekends.

Also, if you heading west and are contemplating taking the Kootenay Lake Ferry rather than risk Kootenay Pass, there is likely to be delays.

There is a ferry service interruption that started Sunday, Mar. 25 and goes through April 7. The Osprey 2000 is receiving semi-annual maintenance. The MV Balfour ferry is running on the regular winter schedule. Vehicle capacity is reduced to 28 vehicles. Possible sailing delays.
