IH has most unvaccinated health care workers

Seven per cent of Interior Health Authority (IH) workers remained unvaccinated against COVID-19 up to the Oct. 26 provincial government deadline, more than double the provincial health authority average.

As of Oct. 26, health-care workers in B.C. were to be immunized against COVID-19 but as the deadline passed, three per cent (4,090) of the 126,343 workers failed to meet that mandate.

However, of IH’s 20,277 employees, 1,369 remain unvaccinated, along with 615 more workers who only have one dose of vaccine, according to Ministry of Health information.

The B.C. government mandate for vaccination includes anyone working in any kind of health-care field – from volunteers, contractors to physicians. The statistics reported herein do not include direct care long-term care workers.

Health Minister Adrian Dix said those who remain unvaccinated will be placed on unpaid leave if they do not receive a first dose by Nov. 15 (unless they have a medical exemption).

Those remaining unvaccinated in provincial health authorities: Interior: 1,369; Fraser: 644; Vancouver Coastal: 522; Provincial Health Services Authority: 496; Northern: 376; Providence: 122; Vancouver Island: 67.

Province-wide, 95% of all health care workers are fully vaccinated and a further two per cent are partially vaccinated.
