Independence means on your own

e-KNOW Editorial

By Ian Cobb

We would like to welcome Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and her husband Harry, Royal Highness the Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel, and sixth in line for the throne, to Canada!

In these dark and troubling times, with human skin at its thinnest since the Spanish Inquisition and once great nations being led by the weakest of narcissists and professional hucksters, it’s lovely to think that a couple of the most famous souls on Earth should wish to move to Canada, when America hungers for royalty and such as it marries well with its penchant for blood-letting and repressing the less fortunate.

So welcome Meghan and Harry!

As for the reasons the young royals are bolting Mother England for the colonies, we’ve been given ‘formal’ ones such as “we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” as they stated on Instagram, also noting, “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”

There are also plenty of rumours and innuendo

One that seems completely believable is the couple want to get away from the British tabloid lunatics who stalk them like hungry Neolithics on red deer. Seriously, why put up with a bunch of needless crap when you’re five funerals away from becoming king?

Canadian media is usually much more polite than your run-of-the-mill princess slaying Brit tabloid greasepigs and you bet your 1977 Silver Jubilee tea set that Harry isn’t much of a fan of that lot.

There is also the matter of the racism that Meghan has experienced, again much thanks to British media, which seems to be rather stuck in the past and is fairly unconscious of the fact that one-sixth of the overpopulated but pretty wee island walk about in non-white flesh.

There have also been damning differences in headlines/story focus in British papers when it comes to Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle that again showcase the lingering racism running through the heart of middle-patch Britain (deliver your favourite Brexit joke here).

So there are plenty of good reasons for Harry and Meghan to cast off their purple robes and seek a more normal life in the colonies, where they say they’ll hang out in maybe half the year, and go home for a spell. Maybe try to score some voice over gigs in Hollywood for some spare change.

Man, I’d love to be able to split my years in Canada and England – just time the seasons right.

Alas, I am independent – the ultimate kind in that I am not employed by anyone or thing other than a trade and an endless set of lips belonging to governments that suck on my wallet.

If THAT is what Harry and Meghan want – to be able to stand on their own two feet and wobble like unsteady fawns losing strength from the weight of countless financial obligations – then let them have at it!

But
seeing as how they wish to be independent – their security costs should be borne by them, not Canadian taxpayers.

If that means tapping Nana Lilibet for a few pounds or digging into their own bank accounts, so be it.

These new arrivals should be treated like every other immigrant – though I suppose Meghan might already have done the penance of crawling over glass in order to qualify. Harry? Sorry pal, get in line.

Get on the tax records; get the necessary things like Canadian passports and provincial driving licences; pay for your own security guards like every other mega rich smarmulator; and register to vote! Good luck and best wishes and welcome/bienvenue to Canada!

I truly hope our media lay off on you guys and for the most part they will because most Canadians don’t really give a hockey puck about what you two are up to 24/7.

Folks back in England do because they’re invested in you through their own tax burdens. You don’t want that and are leaving because of it.

So don’t ask your new countrymen to pay up, either. That is called independence and it will buy you the respect you seek and perhaps deserve. I personally don’t know because I pay no attention to you. I had to look up most of the info I shared in this.

Independence means taking care of your own business without purse strings (see also: obligation stones of Sisyphus) attached.

If you can do that and become contributing citizens of Canada – welcome to you and may the media be polite. As a member of said media, I give you permission to blast rock salt at any scurrilous wags seeking sneaky snaps.
