KIJHL playoffs begin Friday
The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) playoffs get underway Friday night (Feb. 17), with all three East Kootenay squads in action.
The Columbia Valley Rockies host the Fernie Ghostriders in game one of the Eddie Mountain Division Semi-Finals at 7:30 p.m. in Invermere’s Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena.
And the Kimberley Dynamiters welcome the Golden Rockets to the Civic Centre for game one of the Eddie Mountain Division Semi-Finals at 7 p.m.
The Creston Valley Thunder Cats also qualified for the playoffs but are playing the Grand Forks Border Bruins in game one of the Neil Murdoch Division Semi-Finals
The offensively dynamic Rockies finished first in the Eddie Mountain Division on the strength of a 4.95 goals-per-game charge (218 in 44 games), leading to a 31 win, nine loss, two overtime loss and two shootout loss record (66 points).
The Ghostriders finished fourth in the division with a 23-14-5-2 record, good for 53 points, the same as Golden Rockets. However, the Rockets finished ahead in the standings on the strength of two more wins (25-16-2-1).
From the highest scoring team in the league (Rockies) to the third stingiest squad – the Kimberley Dynamiters finished second in the division, allowing only 2.4 goals against per game (106).
The playoff schedule, as usual, is a tight one.
Fernie and Columbia Valley are back at it in game two on Saturday, Feb. 18 and then it’s to Fernie for games three and four on Feb. 20 and 21.
Game two between Kimberley and Golden goes Saturday, Feb. 18, with games three and four in Golden on Feb. 21 and 22.
