Kootenay Contraption Contest relaunches

Students can enter until January 31

KAST (Kootenay Association for Science and Technology) has relaunched the Kootenay Contraption Contest for 2020, presented in partnership with FortisBC.

The contest invites students in Kindergarten to Grade 8 in the Kootenays to imagine, design and illustrate a “contraption” that solves a problem.

Classes or individuals can participate by coming up with the most imaginative responses they can dream up to solve this year’s challenge: Create a contraption that helps improve, solve or raises awareness in your local community about an important issue that is related to climate change.

“We are pleased to relaunch this fun contest for kids as part of the KAST Glows program,” said KAST Executive Director, Cam Whitehead. “It’s a great way for students to engage and to get creative about solving real problems in their communities. Kids think about problems in unique ways, which can sometimes be exactly what’s needed to make progress.”

KAST and program sponsor FortisBC will judge submissions by grade level for creativity, ingenuity and originality. Participants can win an educational kit for their class (KEVA kit or Climate Action kit) and one lucky individual will win the grand prize of a Lenovo Notebook.

“We’re looking forward to seeing all the submissions from the creative kids in this community,” said Blair Weston, community and indigenous relations manager, FortisBC. “We’re expecting to see some very inspiring work. Our thanks to KAST for their ongoing work coordinating opportunities like this.”

To enter, students need to illustrate their idea in this entry form.

Students are encouraged to have fun and be creative by using anything from art supplies, illustrations, multimedia and video in their contest submissions.
