Mainroad advises black ice conditions possible in region

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting this afternoon issued a Weather Event Advisory cautioning about the possibility of black ice on regional highways.

Mainroad warns rain showers and foggy patches across the region tonight, with the road and air temperatures near or slightly below freezing, brings the potential for black ice throughout the service area.

“Any snow showers should change to rain through the afternoon, except for Panorama where snow and freezing rain may continue through the day. Additional snowfall amounts of two to four cm is possible. Scattered flurries are forecast for the overnight for areas above 1,000m with showers with possible flurries mixing at lower elevations,” Mainroad forecasted.

Another system will bring the risk of snow and rain Saturday night through Sunday with snow changing to rain showers for Sunday, likely staying snow for Panorama.

Motorists should expect unsettled weather, drive to the prevailing conditions, prepare for delays caused by the weather and check Drive BC before heading out.

Mainroad will be applying anti-icing chemicals and performing snow removal operations where necessary that will continue on all highways until the event passes and roadways are returned to the acceptable standard.

Mainroad’s 24-hour communications and dispatch office will pass on observations and concerns when contacted.
