Meet BC Green Party candidate Rana Nelson

Columbia River-Revelstoke BC Green Party candidate Rana Nelson is a high-school teacher, writer, editor and longtime community advocate with experience spanning education, housing, employment, healthcare and environmental issues.

Rana currently teaches in Revelstoke and has worked with students in both Francophone and English-language school settings. She holds a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of English and reads every spare minute she can.

Her three children attended Francophone school in Revelstoke, with one graduating with both Francophone and English diplomas, and she remains connected to the local Francophone community. Her approach to teaching focuses on community building and fostering a love of learning.

Her professional background includes work with WorkBC supporting people with diverse abilities in finding stable employment, with VIDEA connecting youth to local food systems and with the Rocky Mountain International Student Program supporting students and families. She has also worked in patient and family advocacy, mental health and community development.

Rana has served as a director of the Revelstoke Community Housing Society and as a citizen representative on the Columbia Basin Regional Advisory Committee, contributing to discussions about housing and the Columbia River Treaty.

She also brings 30 years of experience in writing, editing, research and print communications, with work focused on healthcare, social development, tourism and academic publishing in Canada and internationally.

Rana was the Green Party candidate in the former Kootenay-Columbia riding in the 2021 federal election. That experience strengthened her interest in electoral reform and in ensuring that people feel their voices are represented in public decision-making.

Rana is running in Columbia River-Revelstoke to advocate for safer communities, sustainable resource management, protection of waterways and food systems and stronger collaboration across regions, governments and communities.

“I believe collaboration helps us achieve a society where we can all thrive,” she said.

The provincial election is Oct. 24.
